In the small village of Bonne Fin, Haiti the Hospital Lumiere was established. Haitians traveled many miles on foot to seek medical attention at the “hospital of light”. In 1982 Dr. Mathews, his wife, and his 3 month year old daughter answered God’s calling to help the sick and impoverished people found in the isolated mountains of Haiti. For three years he and his family lived among the Haitians, providing them with surgical excellence in a primitive environment. His medical outreach continues annually as he returns with other qualified physicians to give the gift of God’s healing through the work of his hands, performing more than 800 surgical procedures.

In 2011, after the devastating earthquake that tore apart Haiti, Dr. Mathews and his wife returned to Haiti.
